How badly do you want to be healthy?
We often avoid going to counseling or getting healthy emotionally, physically, and spiritually because of the work, time, and money it takes. We’ll make any excuse, “It’ll take too much time, it’s too expensive, I’m not really hurting that much.” Here’s the deal: We make time and financial allowance for things that we care about, and we sure hope you care about yourself.

Pro tips on how to afford seeing a counselor
Getting access to help is one of the biggest barriers for people. But honestly, if you start looking there are tons of opportunities to get help in your price range. Here are a few pro tips:
1. Budget for counseling
If you’re not paying for it now and you know you need it, you’ll be paying for it later. What do we mean? Well, issues in your life that go unresolved, get worse. If you’re not paying for it when you have the choice, you’ll end up paying for it when you no longer have a choice. So, why not budget for it when you have the choice!
Let’s look at a few things you could cut out for a month or two to set aside money for help:
- Cut out your daily coffee
- Stop eating out
- Push pause on beauty purchases or clothing
- Cancel one (or all) of your streaming services Netflix, Hulu, Disney+
- Decrease your cellphone plan
All of the above bullet points either contribute to mental health disorders or distract from getting healthy. You can start the process of getting healthy just by choosing where your money goes.
2. Find a counselor your insurance covers
If you have health insurance through your job, it may or may not cover counseling but most do. If you have insurance through the Market Place Plans, they are required to cover counseling. Check out Does Insurance Cover Therapy to learn a little more.
You can find out if you’re insurance covers counseling by reviewing your explanation of benefits or calling your insurance company.
3. Try online or sliding scale
There are a ton of online services for counseling these days. You could find a service like BetterHelp which charges $60-$90 per week. (Billed monthly). Or look for counselors who do a sliding scale fee (you’ll be charged based on your income).
Our hope for you is that you prioritize getting healthy. All too often we don’t make emotional, spiritual, or physical health a priority. We put ourselves on the back burner and then we wonder why we don’t feel loved. Put the work in to get healthy and prioritize your growth.
